WA: Rio disappointed over divide vote on federal award offer
Mining giant Rio Tinto's West Australian workforce is divided on whether to accepta move from individual contracts to collective bargaining.
Rio Tinto says about 4,000 miners in the Pilbara region voted yesterday on an offerof collective agreements under the federal system.
The vote comes ahead of the introduction of a state industrial reform bill which wouldphase out individual workplace deals in favour of collective agreements.
Rio Tinto says uncertainty surrounding the final form of the bill prompted its offerto move workers to a federal award.
The collective bargaining offer surprised unions -- because the company had vehementlyopposed the process for more than a decade.
Workers at the Hamersley Iron and Dampier Salt sites have rejected the offer, but RobeRiver miners have accepted it.
Votes from Argyle Diamonds workers in the Kimberley are yet to be tallied.
